Las Vegas Gambling History

Where would Las Vegas be without gambling? Chances are, it wouldn’t be nearly the large and popular city that it is today. When we think about Vegas, we most often think about bright lights and of course, gambling. This is because gambling is one of only two places in the country you can gamble legally and it has become a bit of a poster for gambling and fun in the movies, television and more.

So how did all this come to be? Why it that Las Vegas became the gambling capitol and what is the Las Vegas gambling history? To understand this, we have to look at our forefathers and their love for games involving luck, dice and cards. Long before gambling was official, people played cards and luck games.

In fact, these games were believed to be so fun and addicted that stories tell us some incredibly wealthy people risked a great amount of money just for the sake of enjoying the game or the gamble. When we look at history of the world, most every civilization has a history of some type of gambling being practiced within its communities.

It wasn’t just the wealthy who wanted to join in the gambling fun and excitement. The lure of becoming rich overnight also brought many people to try their hand at luck and fate through gambling.

Many of the common and popular games found in today’s casinos happened over time. Games like poker, playing cards, Blackack and even slot machines each have their own history and each have developed even more in the way

It’s important to note that Las Vegas didn’t emerge into the great gambling city that it is today in just one night. In fact, it took many years and many different people and circumstances to create the Las Vegas that we know today. What began as an abandoned valley turned to a grand city that has people from all over the world flocking to it.

Gambling in Las Vegas began with small games on the side between travelers, workers on the Hoover Dam and other people just passing through but gambling was against the law so you wouldn’t have seen any casinos back then. It wasn’t until 1931 when gambling was legalized and the growth of Las Vegas really took off.

From this point on, casinos began to pop up as quickly as the plans could be drawn for them. People drove across the country to be able to legally gamble and play games in Las Vegas. This is how we came to have the Las Vegas of today.
